Background
The Lord Mayor's
Distress Relief Fund was established in 1961 to provide relief of personal
hardship and distress arising from natural disasters occurring within
Western Australia. The perpetual fund is a registered charitable body
and has approval of the Australian Taxation Office for tax deductibility
of contributions.
Over the years the
fund has assisted with relief appeals for many natural disasters including
floods in Ashburton in 1997 and the Brookton Pingelly bush fires which
also occurred in 1997 and of course the more recent events at Moora, Onslow
and Carnarvon caused by cyclones.
